Service status

NZFA is preparing an optional bank account connection service using Akahu. The service is not currently open for general use. This page describes its intended operation; it is not an invitation to connect an account.

Any client testing will be arranged separately after the relevant requirements have been confirmed. Before a client connection is activated, we will provide final instructions, explain the relevant data-processing arrangements and make connection-management controls available.

Who is providing the service?

The accounting service is provided by New Zealand Finance & Accounting Limited, NZBN 9429033172897, at 2a/96 New North Road, Eden Terrace, Auckland 1021, New Zealand.

Akahu Technologies Limited provides the account connectivity. Akahu is an open finance platform that enables people to share information from eligible financial accounts with services they choose. Akahu does not provide NZFA's accounting advice or endorse our work. Learn more about Akahu.

Why connect an account?

The purpose is to reduce manual statement collection and support the bookkeeping, reconciliation, tax preparation and financial reporting you have engaged NZFA to perform.

Connecting will be optional. If you prefer not to connect, contact us to discuss another way to supply the records needed for your accounting work.

What information will be requested?

For the accounts you select, we intend to request:

  • Account details, such as the account name, number, type and provider.
  • Account balances.
  • Incoming and outgoing transactions, including dates, amounts and descriptions.
  • Available transaction enrichment, such as merchant information or categories.

We intend to request up to 365 days of historical transactions where supported, then ongoing updates, normally daily. Some accounts provide less history. Updates can be delayed or interrupted, and you may still need to supply additional records.

This is read-only access. It will not allow NZFA to make payments or move money from your accounts.

How will authorisation work?

Once the service is enabled for you, the intended process is to:

  1. Verify your identity through NZFA's client access process.
  2. Review the bank connection information and relevant privacy notices.
  3. Continue to Akahu's connection process to choose accounts and approve the requested access.
  4. Return to NZFA to review the connection status and available controls.

Only connect accounts you are authorised to share. Being able to log in to a business account does not automatically establish that it supports this connection or that you have all necessary authority to share its information.

NZFA will not ask you to email us your bank password or enter it into an NZFA form. Follow the instructions presented by Akahu and your account provider.

How long will access continue?

The proposed connection uses ongoing consent rather than a single download. Access continues until it is withdrawn, expires or otherwise ends.

Before activation, NZFA will provide a way to see the connected accounts and withdraw NZFA's access from within the service. Ongoing consents can also be managed through MyAkahu.

Ending access stops further collection through that connection. It does not automatically delete accounting records already lawfully obtained or end your accounting engagement. Our retention and deletion arrangements are explained in our Privacy Policy.

How will the information be used and protected?

NZFA's use will be limited to the agreed accounting purposes. Access should be restricted to authorised people who need the information for that work. This connection will not authorise unrelated marketing, lending decisions or training general-purpose AI models.

Akahu has its own processing and storage arrangements, described in its ongoing-consent privacy notice. NZFA will confirm the storage and processing arrangements relevant to its service before activating client connections. Please review both organisations' notices; they cover different responsibilities.

Read our Privacy Policy, Akahu's Privacy Notice — Ongoing Consent and Akahu's End User Terms.
